UNPOG Holds Strategic Dialogue with Former Heads to Shape Future Direction September 04, 2026

Seoul, Republic of Korea – To commemorate its 20th anniversary, the United Nations Project Office on Governance (UNPOG) of the Division for Public Institutions and Digital Government (DPIDG) of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), convened a Strategic Dialogue with the Former Heads of UNPOG on 2 September 2026 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The Dialogue brought together six former Heads of UNPOG to reflect on the Office's achievements over the past two decades and exchange views on its future strategic direction.

The Dialogue was held at a pivotal moment as the current UNPOG Project Document approaches its conclusion in 2030 and discussions begin on the Office's possible third phase (2030-2045). Participants reviewed UNPOG's institutional evolution, from its early focus on public administration reform and e-government to its current work on SDG implementation and localization, digital and data governance, artificial intelligence (AI), strategic foresight, and institutional resilience.

Discussions focused on strengthening UNPOG's institutional capacity and organizational sustainability to better support Member States in addressing emerging governance challenges. Participants also explored opportunities to deepen partnerships, enhance collaboration with developing countries, and further strengthen UNPOG's role in advancing effective, accountable, and inclusive governance for sustainable development.

The Dialogue generated valuable recommendations and forward-looking perspectives to inform UNPOG's long-term vision and future programme priorities. The insights will contribute to ongoing strategic and programmatic deliberations, including preparations for the Office's possible third phase. As a follow-up, UNPOG will invite the former Heads to participate in the Office's official 20th Anniversary Celebration on 7 September 2026 and the 10th Regional Symposium on Effective Governance and AI Transformation, to be held from 25 to 27 November 2026 in Incheon, Republic of Korea.
