DPIDG/UNPOG participated in the
“2022 United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) World Congress”, held from 10-14 October 2022 in Daejeon, Republic of Korea. The theme for the 2022 Daejeon UCLG World Congress is “Local and Regional Governments Breaking Through As One”. With the presence of 145 countries, 576 cities, and 6152 major national and local government entities, public institutions across various fields, international organizations, the private sector, and the civil society, the World Congress discussed opportunities and challenges in finding sustainable solutions for future generations, the new direction to realizing the value of inclusive economic growth and co-prosperity of mankind through science and technology, and building resilience of our society following the pandemic. During the Opening Ceremony on 12 October, the former UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, and the President of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Yoon Suk Yeol, delivered two keynote speeches, highlighting the critical role of local governments in finding innovative solutions to address ongoing global challenges.
On 13 October, UNPOG organized a thematic Session on “Effective Governance and Digital Transformation for Climate Action and Sustainable Development” as part of the Daejeon Track. The Session included thematic presentations on i) Effective, Inclusive, and Accountable Public Governance for Climate Action, ii) Fostering Digital Transformation for Climate Resilience, and iii) Engaging the Private Sector in Addressing Climate Crisis.
On 14 October, the Head of UNPOG participated in a Session hosted by
Daejeon Sejong Research Institute on a “New Local Autonomy Model in the Age of Digital Revolution”. As a discussant, the Head of UNPOG elaborated on the “Challenging Role of Local Government in the Technetronic Age”.
