At the request of the ICT and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) of UN ESCAP, DPIDG/UNPOG participated in the “Digital SDGs: Regional Workshop on Digital Inclusion and Community Development”, organized by the UN ESCAP, with support from the Korean Federation of Community Credit Cooperatives (KFCC) on 18 – 19 September 2023 in a hybrid modality. This Workshop brought together 59 participants from 16 countries including senior government officials and experts from international organizations, businesses, CSOs, and academia to address the challenges and opportunities that digital transformation for SDG acceleration in the Asia-Pacific region.
DPIDG/UNPOG staff delivered a presentation on “Harnessing Digital Technologies with a Gender-Responsive Approach to Climate Action and Resilience” during Session 6 on Digital (AI) Applications for SDGs. The presentation elaborated on the major challenges confronting women in harnessing digital technologies for climate action and building resilience, notably gender digital divide, lack of engagement opportunities in gender-responsive policy measures, discriminatory gender stereotypes and social norms against women in access to ICT, lack of trust in using internet and digital devices, and lack of government priority in women’s digital skill development. In the presentation, an integrated gender-responsive approach was proposed to address the wide-ranging challenges.
