COMMUNICATIONS & OUTREACH

Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (APMCDRR) (20-22 September, Brisbane, Australia) December 27, 2022

DPIDG/UNPOG staff participated in the APMCDRR, convened by UNDRR and the Government of Australia. This year's conference was centred around the theme, 'From Crisis to Resilience: Transforming the Asia-Pacific Region’s future through disaster risk reduction'. One of the key messages of the chair’s summary was the need for strengthening governance mechanisms to address existing and emerging risk. Furthermore, the outcome recognized the need for scaling up international cooperation and called for a more holistic approach that draws on local, indigenous, and traditional knowledge and experience combined with science, technology and innovation, to reduce existing and emerging risk while recognizing that investments in preparedness and anticipatory action remain important to address residual risk.

At the working session on Innovations in Disaster Risk Management, governments, scientist and technology end-users shared evidence on how science and digital technology has increased community understanding and risk communications, along with enhanced capacity for early warning and action. This Session offered an opportunity to promote UN DESA Curriculum on Governance with a particular focus on the Toolkit on Risk-informed Governance and Innovative Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience.
