UNPOG/DPIDG staff participated in the International Urban Resilience Forum 2019, co-hosted by Seoul Metropolitan Government and UNDRR and organized by Seoul Institute of Technology on 23 September 2019 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The Forum was opened by Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon and Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Disaster Risk Reduction. The forum was attended by 300 participants.

The Forum consisted of sessions on enhancing urban resilience through smart technology; importance of governance in urban resilience; and mayoral round table on best practices of urban resilience in global cities. Presenters, widely ranging from representatives from cities/local governments and international organizations to experts from academia, the private sector and civil society organizations, introduced diverse strategies, policies and cases of building urban resilience around the world and exchanged different views and recommendations. At the end of the Forum, the Seoul Declaration for Strengthening Urban Resilience was adopted by 15 participating cities.

The Forum afforded an opportunity for UNPOG/DPIDG staff to broaden understanding on several up-to-date cases of leveraging digital technologies in enhancing urban resilience and keep abreast of notable good practices of local governance on promoting citizen participation and engagement for building resilient cities. The Forum was also a valuable occasion to interact and network with experts from various sectors and other agencies/international organizations, such as ICLEI, World Bank and WeGO.
